Outsourcing to other countries which a cheaper labor force sounds great, on the surface: why not save some money by hiring some smart Indians? In practice, however, outsourcing has various pitfalls and dangers, including:
- Locals taking advantage of foreigners (such as by charging higher, 'foreigner rates')
- Cultural conflict created by the intersection of trustful & non-trustful or more business-oriented and less business-oriented cultures
- Unforseen expenses
- Quality control (products)
- Quality control (employees)
- Local regulations and taxes
- Dealing with problematic offshore employees
- Communication between the American and foreign teams
- Language and cultural barriers
- Ensuring all your money and investment is accounted for and safe
All of these, taken together, can reduce or even eliminate the savings created by outsourcing.
Moreover, doing outsourcing right -- that is, in a way so as to prevent these problems -- is difficult and complex, which is why you hear about factories moving to Bangalore but not individual jobs. Right?
Well, DP was founded to solve this very problem: to allow small and medium-sized American companies save money by outsourcing work to countries where the labor rates are much cheaper than those in the US; but to do so in a way that best protects the client.
How do we prevent these problems? In short, through a combination of of care, experience, and utilizing the best of our North American and local Latin American offices and networks. More specifically, we have worked long and hard to build a network of programmers and designers in Latin America whom we have worked closely with and whom we trust enormously. We have a local office in Buenos Aires that oversees all of our programmers and designers directly, so all programmers and designers work with locals who speak own language by experienced managers who speak both English and Spanish (or Portuguese) fluently, who share their cultural understandings, who get us the local rates--not the (relatively) exorbinant prices locals charge foreigners, when they can get away with it. Our experience overseeing many projects internationally, dealing with the cultural and legal differences, and communicating clearly between all the parties involved, has taught us that our methods work.
Doing business in Latin America is ugly, and we've seen a lot of it, from Latin American designers trying to charge Americans US$1,000 for work that goes for US$100 locally, to employees who promise but don't deliver, yet still expect to get paid. And our system has taught us who to work with and how to work with them, so that we get the job done, on time and at cost.
In other words, DP gives you the benefits of offshoring -- significantly lower cost -- without the problems and risks that usually come with it.
